Warfare of Grace 2022 Logo & Branding
Summary
In the fall of 2021, Devon Stribling, the founder and CEO of Warfare of Grace, reached out to me about redesigning the logo for his counseling service focused on helping men find freedom from sexual addiction. And, over the next five months, we worked together to establish the design direction, the typography, the color palette, and the logo for Warfare of Grace.
Color Palette
Often, one of the first things I do in the ideation phase of a logo project is ask the client if they have any particular colors in mind for the logo. Devon specifically mentioned blue and gold, and after going through a couple of variations, we eventually settled on the following color palette, featuring a bright, yellow gold and a bold, cobalt blue. Various tints and shades of gold, gray, and blue were then included to build out the rest of the palette.
Logo Icon
One of the unique challenges that we encountered during the ideation phase of the logo design process was figuring out how to visually communicate the two seemingly opposed concepts of grace and warfare within the same icon. We eventually decided to focus on the dove as the foundation of the design because of the strong visual representation it had to concepts like grace, freedom, and the Holy Spirit. And, in my conversations with Devon, it was established that the new logo should look classic yet modern and feel peaceful yet strong.
To accomplish this within an icon, I went with a rounded-corner, minimalistic, monoline style using perfect shapes and straight lines. The shapes create the feeling of a strong, sturdy structure, and the rounded edges provide a softness that would not be there otherwise.
Within the dove are also visual representations of God, a posture of openness to receive love, grace, and freedom from God, and the letter “W” (for “warfare”).
The shield was added later to further emphasize the concepts of warfare, faith, and protection.
Logo Type
To help achieve that unique look and feel, the Warfare of Grace logo type uses two fonts from two very different typefaces.
As a thick, sturdy, modern sans-serif font, Inter Extra Bold helps communicate strength and stability while Prince Valiant, a Gothic script font, helps provide a classic feel harkening back to a time when warriors fought with sword and shield.
Logo Wordmark
By combining the logo icon with the brand name set in the selected logo type, we create a combination mark (or wordmark). This type of logo is extremely useful as both the logo icon and logo type work together to create a distinctly recognizable brand.
The Warfare of Grace wordmark comes in three orientations—vertical, stacked, and horizontal—and each comes with multiple color variations—black, white, color with charcoal text, color with white text, and color with gold text.
